A rota for manufacturing

A factory rota is the crew on the line, the night turn, and the maintenance cover. Shiftbrook publishes those shifts and keeps the timesheet. It does not talk to a machine, a quality system, or a production plan.

Last checked: October 2026. A plain-English summary, not legal advice.

A cycle you build yourself

Four on, four off, and the other named cycles, are patterns you type in. Shiftbrook does not ship a catalogue of them. Copying last week repeats that week. A cycle that is longer than seven days will drift if you only copy Monday to Sunday. The rolling rota entry explains the difference. Place the shifts on the dates, publish the ones the crew should see, and leave the rest as drafts.

Rest still applies across the handover. Eleven hours between working days for an adult, a 20-minute break when the day is over six hours, and a weekly rest of 24 hours or 48 hours a fortnight. The warning on save does not stop the save. A young worker on the floor cannot opt out of the usual 8-hour day and 40-hour week, and should not ordinarily work at night. The product will not know their age. You have to.

Night work and the rate

If the turn regularly includes at least three hours between 11pm and 6am, the night-worker rules can apply: an average of eight hours in 24, and a free health assessment. There is no statutory night premium. Put the contractual allowance in payroll, not in the shift. Shiftbrook has no rate on the shift at all.

Overtime beyond the contracted week is also a contract. There is no general premium. The minimum wage is the floor for the pay reference period, including a heavy week on the line. Annualised hours do not let a busy month hide inside a quiet one unless the contract really is salaried hours work and you have applied those rules. The annualised hours entry points at the GOV.UK calculation guidance. The timesheet is the hours you would test.

The boundary of the product

Clock-in is the phone against the site pin, default 100 metres, no photo. One location is on the free plan. A second building is a further location on the paid plan. Leave and sickness show on the rota. A sickness reason is private. There is no score attached to absence.

The free plan covers up to 5 staff and one location on the first organisation. Past that, the paid plan is £3 per active person per month, with a £15 minimum. A 14-day trial of the paid plan does not ask for a card. When the trial ends, the organisation returns to the free plan. Approved hours download as a CSV. Sending approved hours to Xero Payroll UK is not available until that connection works end to end. Nothing here starts a machine, records scrap, or plans a work order.

Questions

Does Shiftbrook include a four-on, four-off template?

No. You add the shifts for the dates in the cycle. Copying a week does not rotate an eight-day pattern by itself.

Will it warn about the handover?

Saving a week can warn about 11 hours between shifts, the weekly rest, and the 48-hour average. The warning does not block the save.
