A rota for retail

A shop rota is who is on the floor, in the stock room, or locking up. Shiftbrook publishes that week and records the hours. It does not take payments, and it does not decide whether someone must work on Sunday.

Last checked: October 2026. A plain-English summary, not legal advice.

Sunday working in shops

In England and Wales, shop workers and betting-shop workers can opt out of Sunday working, unless Sunday is the only day they were employed to work. The opt-out is a written notice, signed and dated, saying they object to Sunday working. The usual notice is three months, and the employer can still require the Sunday work during those three months. If the employer did not give the written explanation of the right within two months of the person starting, the notice needed to opt out is one month. They must not be dismissed or treated unfairly for opting out.

Staff who started as shop workers on or before 26 August 1994 already have a protected position, and betting-shop workers on or before 2 January 1995 do too. Northern Ireland has its own dates and its own duty to give written details. The Sunday Trading Act 1994 extends to England and Wales. Do not copy this notice period into a Scottish shop and assume it is the same rule. Shiftbrook will not block a Sunday shift because someone might be opted out. Take the Sunday off the rota yourself, after the notice period has run.

One branch, then more

The free plan has one location. Clock-in uses the pin on that location, with a default radius of 100 metres, set anywhere from 25 to 1000. A punch is the phone at that moment, not a photo and not a face. Further branches are on the paid plan, which the 14-day trial includes. Each branch needs its own pin. There is no punch against a site that has no pin.

Open shifts cover a gap on the floor once they are published. Leave sits on the same week. A sickness reason is private to the person and their manager. A person can ask to swap a shift. A manager approves the swap. None of that is a till, a refund, or a delivery slot.

Hours, not the shop

Approved hours download as a CSV. The product does not calculate pay, commission, or a Sunday premium. If the contract pays extra for Sunday, payroll applies it to the hours. Regular premiums can matter for holiday pay. The holiday pay calculator is an estimate from figures you type. Sending approved hours to Xero Payroll UK is not available until that connection works end to end.

The free plan covers up to 5 staff and one location on the first organisation. Past that, the paid plan is £3 per active person per month, with a £15 minimum. A 14-day trial of the paid plan does not ask for a card. When the trial ends, the organisation returns to the free plan. Working-time warnings can show on save and do not refuse it. Young workers in the shop have tighter limits: usually 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, with no opt-out. The working time guide is the longer explanation. This page is not legal advice.

Questions

Will Shiftbrook stop me publishing a Sunday?

No. The opt-out is a notice between the employer and the shop worker. The rota shows the shift you publish. Remove Sunday yourself when the notice period has ended.

Is each shop a free plan?

The free plan is one organisation, one location, and up to 5 staff. A second branch is a further location on the paid plan.
